The exhibition Hearts + Flowers opens next week at Brooklyn Metal Works. My neckpiece, Care Package, will be on view with jewellery objects by 37 other makers. Hearts + Flowers is an exhibition of jewelry that explores the souvenir and sentimentality, on view September 16 - November 12, 2021. There will be an opening reception on Friday, September 17, 6-8pm and the gallery will be open 11am-6pm Tuesday-Sunday. There will also be a closing reception! Friday November 12, 6-8pm, accompanied by an artist talk. Hearts + Flowers was organised and curated by Leslie Shershow and Jessica Andersen, both San Diego based artists. I really appreciate artists like Leslie and Jessica, who use their knowledge of jewellery and making to create meaningful exhibitions like this one. They are exploring what jewellery means to people today by bringing together artists who thinking through this question with their heads and hands.
The piece I made, Care Package, was modelled from discarded bathroom care product packaging that travelled with me between the US, where I currently live, and Australia, where I am from. It’s a bold and heavy object to wear. Go check it out if you’re in the Brooklyn area this Fall.
